Prenatal Yoga

Prenatal yoga is a safe way for expectant mothers to not only stay fit, but to reduce stress, relieve tension and aches, and prepare their bodies for labor.

Prenatal classes are quite a bit different from any other yoga classes. Yoga postures and breathing must be modified for the safety of the baby. Nonetheless, prenatal yoga provides a perfect balance between physical activity and relaxation. Mothers build the strength needed to comfortably carry their babies through pregnancy. They build flexibility to ease the process of labor, and build community by connecting with other mothers-to-be. Perhaps most importantly, prenatal classes help expectant mothers maintain a peaceful state of mind.

As in all yoga styles, mothers are encouraged to focus on the breath throughout the class. Postures are modified so that they're comfortable and safe using blankets, bolsters, and blocks. Breathing techniques are taught to aid in the process of labor, and classes end with a few minutes in relaxation to bring the breath and heart rate back to normal.

Is prenatal yoga for you ?

Prenatal yoga is the best choice of exercise for all expectant mothers. During this crucial time, it's important not to overstress the body or mind. Yoga will help you to keep calm and healthy, and foster an innate connection with your baby.

Even if you've never practiced yoga previously, pregnancy is nevertheless an excellent time to begin.

Speak with your doctor before taking prenatal yoga classes. Prenatal yoga is not appropriate for some health conditions.

Prenatal Yoga Poses

Some of these yoga poses are only appropriate during the first trimester of pregnancy. Many can also be modified in the second and third trimester using props like bolsters and blocks. For your safety and the safety of your baby, only practice yoga under the guidance of a prenatal yoga teacher.
